Rampant power theft in state is the biggest threat to finances of Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB).

President of the PSEB Engineers’ Association HS Bedi said this while he was talking to mediapersons today. He was here to attend a meeting of the association.

He said the state government had miserably failed to check power theft, which had left the board poorer. “Government’s orders to not to check the load on motors installed in farmers’ fields had encouraged the power theft. With no one to keep a vigil, these farmers are enjoying free power. The board is giving Rs 2,600 crore power subsidy, which is unhealthy,” he said.

He added the association was not against unbundling. Government should come out with a white paper on as to how would the unbundled PSEB be run. The IAS lobby was trying to capture power board, while government remained a mute spectator,” he said.

He condemned the action of outgoing general manager of Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Power Plant, Ropar, who had allegedly spoiled ACRs of employees before retiring from the office. He demanded that a disciplinary action be taken against him.

Prominent among others present at the meeting included patron of the association Padamjit Singh, general secretary Bhupinder Singh and vice-president SC Chabba.
