Press Trust of India / Chandigarh August 22, 2009, 16:34 IST

The 540 MW Goindwal Thermal Power Project would be made fully operational by January 2012, GVK Group Chairman-cum-Managing Director G V K Reddy said.

Reddy called on the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today to apprise him of the latest status of the power plant and assured him that the project would be made fully operational by January 2012, an official spokesman in a release said.

Reddy also urged Badal to seek Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's intervention for an immediate coal linkage to the Goindwal Thermal Plant.

On this, Badal said he has already taken up the issue of allotment of coal block/long term linkage for the plant, both with the Prime Minister and Union Minister of Coal Sriprakash Jaiswal to ensure the project was not unduly delayed.

Meanwhile, Reddy said the work on the project was going on a war footing and the Group has already placed an order with Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd (BHEL) for installation of machinery and equipment.
