Two northern grid collapses on Saturday

Chandigarh: In a rare incidence two grid failures took place in Northern Grid on Saturday, in the early morning hours grid collapsed due to heavy fog and in the late evening grid again collapsed due to heavy sparks in the 400 kV Bawana Sub-station .

On Saturday late evening the grid collapsed for second time at 21.45 hrs due to heavy sparks in the 400 KV Bawana Sub station and all lines emanating from Bawana tripped. This followed in the cascade tripping of the other 400 KV transmission lines.

Apart from more than two dozens 400 kV lines, number of 220 kV lines also tripped.

As a result of tripping of above mentioned lines, power supply in Punjab, Haryana, and J&K, HP and Delhi Transmission system were affected.

Rest of the NR grid comprising U.P. Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttarakhand remained unaffected in integrated operation with new grid.

The collapse of grid resulted into loss of generation along with loss of load .The generation loss in Central Sector was 900 MW, Punjab 1700 MW, Haryana 950 MW, HP 275 MW

J & K 250 MW and Delhi 225 MW.

The railway system was thrown out of gear and supply to affected railway traction from Panipat, Narela and Punjab were restored on highest priority within an hour

On Sunday morning northern grid was meeting 22000 MW and major thermal

Generations have been revived except 600 MW in Punjab and 200 MW in Haryana.

The complete system was restored by Sunday afternoon.
