India power sufficient by 2012: Shinde
AMRITSAR:

Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday said India will become power sufficient by 2012 and the government was working in a committed way to achieve the goal.
Shinde called on all the states to use latest techniques for power generation so that the shortage can be overcome.

The Union Minister, who was here for a meeting with private players in power sector, said, "I talked to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal sometime back and assured him all help. The state must look for alternatives like thermal power and gas to deal with power crisis."

"The power sector is on concurrent list and it is the job of the states to generate power.
For long we have been telling the states to give maximum stress on power generation," Shinde told mediapersons.

To a question, Shinde said, private power producers are playing a good role and have helped increasing power generation while working with the government for the last few years.

"In the 12th five-year plan, the government will achieve the target of 78,000-MW power generation. The figure has never been achieved earlier," claimed Shinde
