14-hr power cuts leave Gurgaon dry
TNN, Mar 22, 2010,
GURGAON: Summer is just about approaching but in Millennium City, the days are already dark and dry. Reeling under power cuts lasting upto 14 hours a day, most localities are now having to make do with an hour's water supply at best.
Many are complaining of a water scarcity, triggered by outages of 8-12 hours every day on an average, sometimes more. "With a shortage of over 395 MW, the power crisis continues to cripple Gurgaon. We have been suffering power cuts for the past three months. The situation has got worse in the past two weeks," said Bhawany Shankar Tripathy, a resident of Sector 23.
Citing shortage of supply, Haryana discom-Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) officials claimed the situation was likely to improve Monday onwards as the state was to buy 200MW power from outside.
"A substantial part of that will be supplied to the city. The current power crisis is because of lack of supply from thermal power stations at Yamuna Nagar, Ballabhgarh and Faridabad - the three main sources of power for the city. At present, Gurgaon gets 450 MW during peak time. However, this is almost 35% less than the actual need of the city," said a DHBVN official.
