KOLKATA: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Power, on Thursday said its energy labelling programme scheme has so far helped save 2000 MW of power in the country.

The savings will grow to 3,000 MW, or 82 billion units of power, by March, 2012, a BEE official said. “The labelling scheme has met with success and in line with the current Five-Year Plan (target). As per our assessment, we have reached saving of 2,000 MW, but an independent audit by the National Productivity Council is being carried out,” said Ms Anuradha Bhattacharji, Manager-Strategy and HR, BEE.

“We expect to surpass the target of 3,000 MW of energy savings set for the Eleventh Five-Year Plan,” she said.

BEE plans to extend the ambit of star labelling to 5-6 more products, such as washing machines, set-top boxes, geysers and computers, over the next two years. The energy labelling programme is currently mandatory for products such as air conditioners, fr ost-free refrigerators, tubular fluorescent lamps and distribution transformers.

However, it is voluntary for products such as direct cool refrigerators, general purpose industrial motors, monoset pumps, ceiling fans, domestic gas stoves and colour televisions, among others.

In association with Emerson Climate Technologies, BEE aims to train about 5,000 salesmen across the country and about 600 salesmen in Kolkata on energy labelling this year.

“These trained salesmen will help consumers make an energy-efficient choice while buying their home ACs,” said Mr Arup Majumdar, Director, Emerson Global Programme. - PTI
