Chandigarh: The time is running out for NTPC to commission the first unit of Indira Gandhi super thermal Plant Jhajjar before the start of Common Wealth games, yet NTPC and BHEL are still optimistic about its commissioning

Jhajjar thermal plant is a joint venture of NTPC, Delhi and Haryana costing about 7892 crore. The equity participation by Haryana in the project is 25 percent and while its energy share is 750 MW. NTPC is having 50 percent equity share and while Delhi has 25 percent

Three units of 500 MW each were to start operation before the start of common wealth games. Now even the commissioning of one unit before the start of games is unlikely. CEA schedule of coming power projects has shown the commissioning of first unit in November.

The commissioning of 1500 MW Jhajjar thermal plant has been delayed mainly due to failure of BHEL to supply the critical equipment in agreed time schedule. BHEL is yet to supply controlled circulation pumps and complete the fuel oil system. The project, located in the Jhajjar district of theHaryana state, has been facing recurrent delay due to the slow pace of execution of the balance-of-plant components by BHEL

According to sources BHEL has delayed the supply of IP turbine inner casing for unit 2 and 3.

The first unit of thermal plant is not likely to start generation at full load before the start of commonwealth games even if the unit is started on oil firing in September. The second unit can be expected anytime after February 2011 and there is no time schedule for the third unit

Delhi ‘s Chief secretary expressed hope that the first unit of Jhajjar thermal plant which is a joint venture of IPGCL with Haryana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (HPGCL) and NTPC will also start generating power before the Games.
