The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will take up two major generation projects in the current financial year — the 500 MW Kundah pumped storage hyrdo project and the 600 MW Ennore Thermal Power Station project.
The Kundah project comprises four units of 125 MW each. The project is to be implemented in two phases. Phase I will consist of one unit and all the civil works, and will cost Rs 488 crore. Phase II is for the other three units and will cost Rs 620 crore.
The Rs 1,108-crore project is being funded by Rural Electrification Corporation. It came up for discussion at a meeting of TNEB and REC here on Wednesday. The meeting was to discuss the projects of TNEB that are covered by a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two organisations in 2007. The MoU makes way for Rs 16,000 crore of REC funding of various projects in the state.
For the 600 MW Ennore thermal power station project, it is understood that a detailed project report is under preparation. The Rs 3,093-crore project is to be funded by a Rs 2,475 crore loan from REC.
The TNEB-REC meeting was chaired by the TNEB Chairman, Mr C P Singh. Mr Guljit Kapur, Director, REC, and other officials of both organisations participated in it.
TNEB intends to draw Rs 3,826 crore in 2010-11 from REC for various generation, transmission and distribution projects.
REC to fund TNEB joint ventures
REC has sanctioned Rs 13,560 crore towards three joint ventures of TNEB of a total installed capacity of 4,300 MW, said a press release from REC.
The funding is part of the Rs 16,000-crore MoU of 2007.
