LUCKNOW: Employees of various state government departments observed `Virodh Diwas' on Friday in protest against the state government policy of reservation in promotion. They demanded doing away with the policy, as it hampers efficient working of the system. The agitating employees also claimed that a large number of posts are still vacant.
The protesting employees cite the January 4 order of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, which had quashed the policy. The state government on the other hand has filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court against the High Court order.
Meanwhile employees claim that demonstrations would continue till February 20. After this, a state level convention would be called to decide upon the future plan of action. The protest was organised under the aegis of an umbrella association of state government officials and employees of general category, Sarvajan Hitay Sanrakshan Samiti. President of the samiti Shailendra Dubey said that they demand chief minister to promote the engineers as per the High Court order.
Meanwhile, the samiti condemned the attack on the office of UP engineers association on Thursday evening.
On the other hand another group called Arakshan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (ABSS) essentially having officials and employees from the reserved category as its members demanded reservation in promotions. The association held sabhas. Secretary of the samiti, AK Dohre said the case is now in the Supreme Court. "This is nothing but an attempt to harass the engineers from the reserved category," Dohre said.
