PSEB Engineers' Association strongly criticised the move of the state power companies to recruit fresh assistant engineers on contract basis for 3 years and has sought intervention of Chief Minister for making recruitment on regular basis.

H S Bedi ,President of the association said that it is their considered view that recruiting fresh engineering graduates on contract is not only against the long term interests of the power companies but also against the letter and spirit of Indian Electricity Rules and Central Electricity Authority guidelines framed for operation and maintenance of power system.

Power Sector requires highly trained and competent engineering cadre. These fresh engineers require grooming to take up the challenging tasks of manning the power industry. Induction level training is a must to orient their knowledge as per Power Sector requirements. It is not understood how engineers recruited on contract basis will be imparted such extensive and expensive training by the companies as they will not be bound to serve the companies after expiry of contract period.

It appears that intention is not to recruit best talent keeping in view the long term interests of the power companies but to address the political compulsion of the election year to give employment to few individuals.

Bhupinder Singh, General Secretary said that PSEB Engineers Association has decided to oppose this move tooth and nail to protect the long term interests of the power sector in the state. Association has convened an emergency meeting of its core committee to chalk out "Protest Action" to highlight the wrong policies of the power companies and the state government.

The state government by handing over all future generating plants to private companies has already abrogated its responsibility to provide cheap and affordable power to the consumers in the coming years. All other states in the country are adding generation through state as well as private sector. Also by ignoring financial restructuring and helping the power companies financially at the time of unbundling of PSEB, the state government has made Powercom a financially bankrupt company with cumulative losses likely to exceed Rs. 12000 crore.
