Central Electricity Authority has asked all the thermal power generating companies to blend imported coal with Indian coal to bridge the projected gap between demand and supply of indigenous coal.

Secretary CEA in its letter has advised all power generating companies and power project developers earlier this week that in future all the boilers should be designed for blend ratio by weight of 70:30of imported and indigenous coal. The thermal plants should also design their unloading handling and blending of imported coal with indigenous coal.

The letter further states that large quantity coal variations may not be readily accommodated in existing plants .limited blending of coal should be continued. The use of imported coal is necessary as a large number of thermal projects are coming in next few years.

Supply of coal by CIL to power utilities over the past few years has been falling short of requirement for the electricity generation targets. The utilities had reported a loss of 10.9 billion units in 2008-09, 14.5 billion units in 2009-10 and 5.3 billion units between April 2010 and December 2011
