The power supply of Civil Lines, Mahal and Gandhibagh divisions of Nagpur in Maharashtra has been handed over to franchisee Spanco from today despite protests by employees.

The franchisee will supply power to the area falling within municipal limits of the city that are west of Wardha Road and South of Amravati excluding Chinchbhuvan and Sitabuldi. In the next fifteen years, franchisee Spanco will collect bills, attend breakdowns, provide new connections and perform every other activity that was so far done by MSEDCL.

The number of MSEDCL employees working in the franchisee area was 1,118. However, only 60 MSEDCL employees have joined Spanco so far on deputation. Of this 34 are from Nagpur district and eleven employees of Nagpur rural zone are expected to join today.

Shaliender Dubey Secretary General All India power Engineers federation said that it was very unfortunate that Maharashtra Government has handed over urban distribution of electricity of Nagpur and Aurangabad to private franchisee which is not at all in the interest of state and electricity consumers. AIPEF had already requested Chief Minister to intervene in the matter so that franchisee of Nagpur and Aurangabad is scrapped and high earning revenue areas remain with MSEDCL but it appears that industrial houses have prevailed upon, Dubey said.

It may be added that during last 2 years Nagpur and Aurangabad revenue collection efficiency has remarkably improved and without the financial help of the state government and engineers of Nagpur and Aurangabad have shown best possible results.
