The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is charging octroi duty on electricity bills from the consumers residing in colonies outside the Municipal Corporation (MC) and octroi limits of Ludhiana.

This fact came into light through information sought by Dr S B Pandhi through the RTI act, from PSPCL. Dr Pandhi moved this application on behalf of the Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat on May 11.

It needs to be mentioned that as per the rules of PSPCL, octroi duty can only be levied on electricity inside the MC limits.

Dr Pandhi said that the matter started with the individual cases of Hardial Singh resident of Bains village and Gurdev Singh resident of Ayali Kalan, where octroi duty had been charged even though the villages were beyond the octroi limit. A letter has been written to the PSPCL chief engineer for refund of this duty.

Also, it has been seen that the PSPCL is charging octroi duty from consumers of Friends colony and near-by areas on Pakhowal Road, which do not come under the municipal limit. The consumers living in Ayali, Bains, Threeke, Manakwal, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Lalton, Thakkarwal, Sugandh Vihar, areas on Dhandra road and elsewhere are also giving octroi duty on their bills.
