Thermal generation achieves 11.40 per cent growth in May

The performance of coal based thermal plants in country has improved as per CEA report released today. However, many coal based thermal generation plants are still lagging behind like the one in Khedar, Hisar.

COAL BASED thermal generation of the country has achieved an impressive double digit growth rate of 11.40 per cent in May despite fuel shortage and less demand.
According to a CEA report released today, the coal based thermal generation in the month of May was 49,783 million units against 44,961 million units during the corresponding period last year. This is also more than the programmed generation for the May 2011 which was 49,269 million units.

It may be mentioned that earlier during the month of August 09, 10.17 per cent increase was recorded.

The central sector and private sector generating stations have reported backing down of some of their units due to low scheduling. The achievement in the thermal generation could have been more as per report.

The plant load factor of coal based thermal plants improved by 1.16 per cent in May 11. During the month of May 2011, 27 numbers of coal-based thermal plants of country achieved more than 90 per cent plant load factor. Four thermal plants in central sector and two plants in private sector with capacity of 5730 MW achieved more than 100 per cent plant load factor. Ropar thermal plant achieved 92.55 PLF in May this year.

Twenty thermal plants of country failed to achieve the assigned targets of generation. Khedar (Hisar) thermal plant is amongst those plants that could not adhere to generation schedule. This is due to delay in stabilisation of unit one and two of 600 MW capacity each. The shortage in generation was 257.63 million units.
