All India Power Engineers federation has sought intervention of union power secretary to terminate the spillage immediately and allow the reservoir to fill up as per the prevailing inflows.

Padamjit Singh Chairman has written today to P. Uma Shankar Secretary Power informing that BBMB authorities have persisted with spillage to such an extent that now it may not be possible to fill up the reservoir at least up to last year's level of 1394.5 fee BBMB is continuing to spill water from the Pong Dam even though the prevailing reservoir level is around 1384 feet and even though the trend of inflows is reducing. At present the reservoir level is 1384.15 feet, inflows are 25,000 cusecs and releases are 17,500 through power house and 7,500 through spillway. The total releases are 25,000. In this way, the releases have been kept equal to the inflows by adjusting the spillage and the reservoir level is almost constant.

Padamjit said that Since the filling period of the Pong dam is up to 20th September and the trend of inflows has a reducing pattern, by maintaining a low level of 1384 feet through spillage, the chances of filling of the reservoir to 1390 feet are low and the chances of filling up to 1395 feet by end of filling period are remote.

Padamjit stressed that last year the Pong reservoir was filled up to 1394.5 feet whereas the full reservoir level is 1400 feet and the dam designed for a maximum level of 1421 feet. The filling at least up to last year’s level be allowed.
