CHANDIGARH: Pong Power House of BBMB has been conferred with Bronze Shield for the year 2010-11 under National Meritorious Award Scheme for Power Sector, instituted by Sushil Kumar Shinde, Union Minister of Power presented the Bronze Shield to AB Agrawal, Chairman, BBMB and Ashok Thapar, Member/Power, BBMB at a function held at Vigyan Bhawan.
For this prestigious award, Pong Power House has been selected from among all the 100MW and above Hydro electric projects in the country. Thapar said that the award is given on the basis of parameters of plant availability and meeting generation targets. It was only due to meticulous maintenance & planning of BBMB that inspite of more than 34 years age of generating units of Pong Power House, excellent plant availability of 99.19% could be achieved.
Much more than just meeting the generation target, Pong Power House generated 1347 million units of energy i.e. 52% more than the target fixed by Central Electricity Authority. This Power House also performs the crucial role in the region for voltage stabilization, by injecting reactive power upto 192 MVAR. Pong Power House was awarded meritorious performance award earlier also for the year 2009-10.
Thapar further added that as Pong machines can be run on the condenser mode, therefore they contribute a lot by supporting the grid by quickly putting them on load as per requirement. In addition, they go a long way in controlling the voltage parameters of the grid.
