Power demand in Punjab rises by 350 lac units

PATIALA: Power demand in Punjab has risen by 350 lac units after 8 hour power supply to agriculture sector for paddy sowing.
The power demand in state which was around 1400 lac units last week and the same has crossed 1733 lac units on Tuesday. This demand is expected to cross 2000 lac units in coming weeks. Punjab State power Corporation Ltd.(PSPCL) has been supplying 1685 lac units daily and power shortfall is around 50 lac units.

The power demand in state is around 8400 MW and evening peak load shortage id more than 1140 MW. The low frequency in northern grid has forced the state to not to resort to power over-drawl from grid. The power frequency in the region for most part of day was around 49.4 Hz. The state is strictly following its power drawl schedule of 970 lac units.
The state is drawing average 2364 MW hour from inter - state generating stations. Under bilateral agreements state is getting average 1790 MW hour.
With delayed and below normal monsoon the state may not get anticipated boost of generation from hydro projects. The water level in the reservoirs of Punjab is less than last years’ level. The water level in Bhakra reservoir is 1534.66 feet against last year level of 1571.66 feet . The inflow in reservoir is around 14690 cusecs against last years’ inflow of 22644 cusecs. Similarly water level in Ranjit Sagar Dam reservoir is 501.29 meters against last years’ level of 512.14 meters.
