PSEB sold 180 million units power to other states in October

Punjab State Electricity Board sold 180 million units of power to other states on short term basis in the month of October 2008 to tide over the financial crunch faced by it and imposed power cuts of various duration on the consumers.
Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) in its report on short term transactions of power for the month of October 2008 has reported that Punjab topped the northern region and third in country by selling 180.07 milliom units power to other states. Himachal Pradesh and Delhi came next in selling power in the northern region. Haryana purchased 200 million units of power during the same period to supply power to consumers.
PSEB sold 76.9 million units of power through power exchange at market rates and sold its share of 53.82 million units by under drawing from northern grid at unscheduled interchange rates (UI rates).Further PSEB sold 49.33 million units in October through bilateral agreements.
CERC study further points out that Power Exchanges in India are selling power to power deficit states at higher rates than the unscheduled interchange rates .The minimum and maximum prices at which electricity was sold in the two operating power exchanges of the country were much more than the unscheduled interchange (UI) rates
The minimum and maximum price at which power was traded at the Indian Energy Exchange was Rs.2.50/unit and Rs.11.00/unit, respectively, while the corresponding figures for Power Exchange India Ltd were Rs.5.50/unit and Rs.10.50/unit, respectively. In comparison, the trading licensees sold electricity at prices of Rs.1.39/unit and Rs.10.39/unit, respectively, at the two extreme ends of the spectrum. The corresponding figures for UI rates were pegged at Rs 1.2/unit and Rs 10/unit.
It may be mentioned that during the month of October 2008, total electricity generation in India, was 61966.84 million units. Of the total, 4232.18 million units were transacted in the short-term transactions, 2028.73 million units through bilateral arrangements, followed by 1826.14 million units through over drawls from the grid and 377.31 million units through power exchanges. As per report IEX sold 375.19 million units though the demand of power through exchange was 1555.94 million units.
