PATIALA: Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. (PSPCL) has allowed use of private meters to its prospective consumers to tide over the meter shortage problem.

PSPCL has empaneled seven firms for private sale of two wire static energy meters to prospective consumers. The meters purchased by consumers will be tested and sealed by PSPCL in their testing laboratories.

The sub divisions will now start issuing new domestic connections to consumers as per seniority that was waiting for months to get new connections. PSPCL does not have new meters in its stores for the last six months.

There are no instructions yet if a consumer with higher seniority does not opt for private meter how the release of connection of those prospective consumers below him will be decided .

It may be mentioned that Gurnek Brar, a retired PSEB engineer had filed a petition before Punjab State Electricity regulatory Commission against non-availability of single phase energy meters in Punjab. He submitted before the commission that PSPCL has nil stock of meters leading to delay of months in releasing new connections and replacement of dead and defective meters.
Taking a serious view of non-availability of meters PSRC has directed PSPCL to file detailed reply by October 23. The next date of hearing in this case is October 30.
